When discussing the evolution of modern Sinhala pop and alternative music, the name Kasun Kalhara stands out as a revolutionary force. Gifted with a mesmerising vocal range and an unparalleled genius for music composition, Kasun successfully transformed the soundscape of the 2000s, blending classical operatic elements with Western progressive rock and acoustic harmonies.
A Royal Musical Lineage
Kasun Kalhara Jayawardene was born on November 11, 1983, in Rajagiriya, into one of the most respected musical families in Sri Lanka. He is the son of the legendary music director H.M. Jayawardene and the iconic classical songstress Malini Bulathsinghala. Growing up in a household filled with melodies, Kasun was naturally exposed to the finest nuances of Sri Lankan fine arts from his absolute childhood.
His mother, Malini, was his biggest pillar of strength and celebrated his every step in the industry. During a press conference, when a journalist asked her about the most unforgettable day of her life, she beautifully replied, "The day my son received the blessings of the Master (Premasiri Khemadasa)!" Sadly, both of his legendary parents have passed away, but Kasun beautifully continues their majestic musical legacy.
The Khemadasa Influence and Classical Foundation
Kasun’s structural understanding of music was sharpened under the strict guidance of the maestro Premasiri Khemadasa (often referred to as 'Master'). Kasun became an integral student of Khemadasa’s music academy and performed as a prominent member of the prestigious "Octavista" operatic choir. The heavy orchestral and operatic influences seen in Kasun's modern compositions are a direct result of this legendary mentorship.
The 2000s Revolution with Indrachapa Liyanage
Kasun Kalhara officially broke into the mainstream music industry in the year 2000, collaborating with his close friend and rock vocalist, Indrachapa Liyanage. Together, they released the groundbreaking duo album titled "Haritha Nimnaya".
Tracks like "Radha Krishna" and "Midule Weli Pata" shattered conventional Sinhala pop formulas, introducing dynamic vocal harmonies and alternative acoustic arrangements that instantly captivated the youth of Sri Lanka. Following this success, Kasun released his solo masterpieces like "Ananthayata Yanawamai" and "Me Tharam Siyumali", cementing his place as the ultimate youth icon of romantic alternative music.
Pioneer of Mega Live Concerts
Kasun Kalhara completely revolutionised the culture of live musical concerts in Sri Lanka, raising the bar to international production standards. His mega-concerts are celebrated for using massive live orchestras and complex lighting setups:
Kasun Kalhara Live in Concert: His initial signature solo concert series that pulled massive crowds.
Unforgettable Live in Concert: A deeply emotional tribute show where he brought back the immortal melodies of his late mother, Malini Bulathsinghala, alongside his hits.
The Black Red White Concert: A thematic musical experience that showcased his versatility across different genres.
The Romantic Opera: A monumental concert that beautifully merged his classical operatic roots with popular contemporary love songs, a concept never before attempted on such a scale in Sri Lanka.
Cinematic and Television Contributions
Beyond his standalone albums, Kasun has made vast contributions as a playback singer and music director for critically acclaimed films and television teledramas. His compositions for cinema soundtracks have won several national awards, highly praised for using non-traditional instruments and profound vocal layering.
An Enduring Legacy
Kasun Kalhara is not just a commercial singer; he is a visionary artist who taught the younger generation of Sri Lankans how to enjoy complex musical arrangements. By gracefully blending the classical dignity of his parents' era with the progressive sounds of the modern world, Kasun remains an undefeated genius and an eternal icon of Sri Lankan music.
